QR Codes for LVAD Emergency Management for EMS Providers

7/14/2026

Created by: Mindy Seigh, BSN, RN, CCTC, VAD-C

Senior Heart Transplant/VAD Coordinator

Audience: Community EMS Providers

S

Situation

Previous QR codes for EMS to use a quick reference for emergency LVAD management from ICCAC no longer functional.  Currently there are no comparable reference guides available to the public.

B

Background

LVAD patients are a low volume, high acuity population in our community.  It is extremely difficult to ensure all EMS providers in all our surrounding communities remain adequately trained at all times. The need for a quick reference for EMS providers is crutal in maintaining safe management of the community LVAD population.

A

Assessment

Sentara has developed QR code “bag tags” for each specific LVAD device to attach to all LVAD patient’s back-up bags to ensure quick access to emergency management of alarms and equipment during LVAD emergencies for EMS providers.

R

Recommendation

Share QR code “bag tag” information with all area EMS providers.
