Good afternoon,

Attached is the severe weather briefing from National Weather Service Wakefield, VA as of 2:15PM EDT, Friday, May 16 highlighting the storm potential for today and Saturday. 

What's Changed: 

  • The Slight Risk (2 out of 5) has been expanded to include Northeast North Carolina
  • Updated timing graphic for today
  • Reduced severe storms risk for Saturday
Key Points: 
  • The  Slight Risk (level 2 of 5) of severe weather has been expanded to cover the entire area to include northeast NC for later this afternoon into tonight.
  • Damaging wind gusts up to 50 to 70 mph are the main threat with the strongest storms, but instances of large hail (up to quarter size) and a tornado or two cannot be ruled out.
  • A few additional waves of showers and storms are possible late tonight and early Friday morning, but these are not expected to be severe.
  • The severe weather threat for Saturday has decreased with just a Marginal Risk (level 1 out of 5) mainly in the east. There is a low confidence in storm development and timing Saturday.
