Good morning,

Attached is an updated briefing from National Weather Service Wakefield, VA as of 9:00 AM Wednesday May 14, 2025, highlighting the heavy rain, potential flooding, and strong to severe storms this afternoon/evening and Thursday. 

What Has Changed?

  • River flooding along portions of the Rivanna and James Rivers. 
  • Still monitoring the potential for additional flooding and a few severe storms this afternoon/evening.

Key Points: 

  • Storms are expected this afternoon/evening. Some could become strong to severe, with strong damaging wind gusts to 45-60 mph and large hail being the primary threats. Timing of storms looks to be between 3-9 PM.
  • Rainfall totals of 1-3” are possible in a few spots from these storms. Localized flash flooding is possible during the afternoon/evening (best chance is in urban areas of central/SE Virginia).
  • In addition, isolated storms are possible again Thursday afternoon/evening.
  • Locally heavy rainfall last night has led to rising river levels and increasing potential for minor river flooding today into Thursday.
  • Temperatures and humidity significantly increase by Friday, with heat indices approaching 90-95° Friday afternoon.
  • Marine Weather - Small Craft Advisories are in effect for the coastal waters as seas remain elevated throughout the day today. Seas will subside tonight and into Thursday morning. Seas of 5-8 ft will become 3-4 ft across southern coastal waters and 4-5 ft for northern coastal waters tonight.
