Subject: NWS Wakefield Winter Storm Briefing #3

Good morning,

Attached is an updated briefing from National Weather Service Wakefield, VA as of  5 AM, Saturday, January 4, 2025, highlighting the potential impacts from a winter storm expected Sunday evening into Monday and Monday night.

NEXT UPDATE 5 PM Saturday

Key Points:

  • Winter Storm Watches are in effect for much of central VA and the Eastern Shore.
  • Good confidence for an impactful winter event with significant snow, sleet and freezing rain Sunday evening through Monday and now into Monday night.
  • Forecasts have trended colder resulting in a little more forecast snow. However given the wintry mix Monday afternoon, exact amounts are uncertain. Snow, sleet and freezing rain will be significant enough to impact travel across a broad area of central VA, northern VA and Eastern Shore. Travel impacts will occur Sunday night into Monday morning and persist into Monday night and Tuesday morning.
  • A second round of snow is expected late Monday afternoon and evening as the storm system moves offshore and cold air returns. This will result in some additional snow accumulation Monday evening and night.
  • Bitterly cold temperatures are expected next week following the winter event with daytime highs potentially remaining near freezing for a portion of next week.
  • Marine Weather - Gale Warnings are in effect for today for the coastal waters and wind will gradually decrease later today, but Small Craft Advisory conditions will persist. Gale conditions return for all waters Monday night into Tuesday as the storm system moves offshore and strengths.
