Good afternoon
It was noticed that the Control Substance waste bin that the different healthcare systems have placed in the ERs for EMS to waste medication/drugs had used syringes and other EMS-related trash placed in these bins.
These bins are for Control Substance medication waste only. They are not intended to be sharps containers. If an EMS Provider has a controlled substance left in a syringe or needs to waste from the vial or other device the medication is to be pulled up in a syringe and squirted into these bins. The needle and syringe should then be placed in the sharps container. Please re-educate, and reinforce this with the field providers. (I have included pictures below where you can see the syringes)
