WVEMS Medication Kit Town Hall

Western Virginia EMS Council will host a Town Hall on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 17:30 with WVEMS EMS Agency Leadership, EMS Agency Physicians, and Hospital Pharmacy Partners. This event will be held virtually to discuss the path forward of the Regional Medication Exchange Kit Program. We will provide an update on recent developments with the FDA and DEA. We kindly ask that agencies have no more than 2 representatives attend to ensure that there is ample space for all our agencies and physicians to attend due to capacity limits of meeting platform.

Baxter Manufacturing Facility affected by Hurricane Helene

The Baxter Manufacturing facility in North Carolina has been closed due to damage sustained during Hurricane Helene. Baxter is one of the leading providers of Normal Saline and D10 utilized by EMS agencies. Currently there is not a nationwide shortage, but distributors have put emergency allocations in place to prevent “panic purchasing”. At this time agencies should be mindful that this could lead to future shortages while Baxter works to ramp up production in other facilities. We ask that providers are mindful of this situation and only utilize when clinically necessary. WVEMS continues to monitor this situation with local, state, and federal entities. You may begin to see this as a restricted item at area hospitals. WVEMS has begun the procurement process for a small supply to help offset the ability of agencies to obtain while we monitor the ongoing situation. Please reach out to Chris Christensen with any questions or concerns.

American Heart Association – Training Site

WVEMS has been an American Heart Association Training Site for two years. We can offer courses available by the American Heart Association. Please contact Daryll Perry with any questions about AHA!

National Ketamine Shortage

There is currently a national shortage of Ketamine. There will be no substitute during the shortage. Should pharmacies be unable to replace, the box will be marked that there is no Ketamine due to shortage. WVEMS remains in contact with pharmacies and will update agencies as more information becomes available.
