Good afternoon,

Attached is an updated briefing from National Weather Service Wakefield, VA as of  4:45 PM EST Tuesday January 21, 2025, highlighting the very cold temperatures and the chance for accumulating snow tonight and early Wednesday. 

What Has Changed?

  • Winter Storm Warnings have been expanded to include southside Hampton Roads as well as Bertie NC for 3 to 5” of snow.
  • Winter Weather Advisories have been expanded to include Accomack and York VA for the potential of up to 3” of snow.
  • Phone lines at the NWS office in Wakefield are down at this time. If you need to reach us, we can be reached via cell phone at 757-377-8151. We are also available via this email address, NWS Chat via Slack, and our Social Media Platforms.

Key Points: 

  • Winter Storm Warnings are now in effect across most of northeast NC, including the northern Outer Banks, as well as southside Hampton Roads, including Norfolk and Va Beach. Overall model confidence and snow has increased over this area, with 3-5” of snow forecast tonight into Wednesday AM. Locally higher amounts will be possible. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for much of the remainder of southeast VA into interior northeast NC, where 1-3” of snow is expected. A light accumulation of snow (<1”) is also possible across the rest of central/eastern VA and the MD eastern shore. 

  • Remaining very cold through midweek. Daily highs Wednesday will again be in the 20s, with early morning lows in the single digits to mid teens. Prepare now for minimum wind chills as low as 5 to 10 above in the south and near to occasionally below zero across the north each night through Wednesday night/early Thursday. 

  • Marine Weather - A Freezing Spray Advisory is in effect through Wednesday morning, with light to moderate freezing spray expected. Small Craft Advisories are in effect tonight into Wednesday morning.
