Subject: NWS Wakefield Thursday Weekly Briefing

Good morning,

This is the weekly Thursday briefing, which will cover the weather through the early to middle part of next week.  Please note these weekly briefings will be suspended during times when other weather specific briefings are being provided focusing on high impact weather events (e.g. winter and coastal storms).

Key Points:

  • A winter storm will impact the entire region Friday evening into Saturday morning. A widespread 2-3" inches of snow is likely along with a band of more significant accumulations of 4 to 6" is possible.
  • Onset of snow will be around 6 to 10 pm Friday, increasing in intensity late Friday night and through the late night/early morning hours Saturday. Snow mixes with or changes over to freezing rain and or sleet across southern portions of the area Friday night.
  • A band of heavier snow with higher snowfall rates over portions of south central VA, Central VA and eastern VA is possible. The exact location and size of the heavier band is still uncertain.
  • Marine Weather - Gale conditions persist through today. Winds decrease later this evening into tonight. Small Craft Advisory conditions are then expected later tonight. Gales are NOT expected with the winter storm.
